LIFE | Dressing For Comfort

The Dutch are known for their sober attitude, no sillyness, no frillyness. When dressing, practicality always comes first. But what I've always disliked is the common thought that practicality and aesthetics don't mix. Like ignoring how ugly Uggs are because of their comfort. As if there aren't any comfortable shoes in the world that don't make your feet look 5 sizes bigger. As a protest against this practicality I stopped wearing jeans for years, looking back it was an unnecessary masochistic thing to do.

For a day in the city I wore something as decadent as a high slit floorlength skirt in the most casual of fabrics; heather grey jersey, sheer pantyhose with flat shoes, a leather backpack and some gold metal jewelry.

I agree with you for Uggs shoes, I have a pair of them and I wear it only at home as slippers! Well unfortunately we don't have more pictures of this outfit but it looks really good! I love the skirt! :)

I am soooo glad someone agrees with me. People, admit it. UGGS ARE UGLY! IT LOOKS AS IF U HAVE POLAR BEAR MEAT AROUND UR FOOT! Totally with u! And I love that skirt...

That's why I adore you. You look incredible and almost every outfit makes me gasp but you always seem like you are getting on with life and that your aesthetic is part of it, rather than a hindrance to it, like it seems for many

I like this article a lot and I must say I totally agree with you when you say that practicality and aesthetics are two things that can meet. Your outfit is a good choice because with your skirt and its vent you have the perfect feminine touch associate with coziness thanks to the jacket, the shoes and your backpack :).

Disagree. I kind of like the awkwardness of Uggs. Its just that funny imperfection I can handle on my feet. Mixed with good clothes they could look nice. Nevertheless I hate that "I-don't-care" look when girls purchuse those fake Uggs for 5 pounds (euros/...) and then walk on the side of the shoe - GROSS!

one reason i admire your blog (there are many!) is the way you blend practicality and purpose with aesthetics. here in the US especially, comfort dressing is the new standard. above all else one must feel physically comfortable, regardless of the poor sartorial choices made in order to maintain this so-called comfort. where i live is particularly thus.

i know what you mean about the uggs, for most don't "get" how uggs should be, dare i say, styled. for example, boot cut jeans and tracksuits are the worst with uggs! furthermore, they are tricky with some body types; and those ghastly colors - just no. for me, it's short black uggs only, worn with all black, skinny jeans or leggings.

Love it! Not a very big fan of uggs either :)

Of course style doesn't have to be compromised for comfort! Which so many people think is true. I mean, that's why design exists! Aesthetics AND functionality.

so true, there are so many other ways and you executed this one perfectly! :)

Completely agree - I have no idea why people can't search out comfortable yet aesthetically pleasing garments. They just act like sheep, copying each others' justifications.

Loving the photos - looked like a blurry version of the Theyskens Theory lookbooks :)

I agree- its just as easy to put on something cute and comfortable as it is to put on the oldest, grossest clothes you have laying around the house!

I do need to DIY a slit skirt like this sometime soon.

You definitely prove that practicality and aesthetics go together. This look (and the photography) is amazing. I like the length of the skirt and slit with the flat shoes.

The problem with jeans is that you see them everywhere, which of course makes them usual. On a post where I was asking what people think basics are and I mentioned jeans, I got a comment from a girl saying that she was thinking more about me. I dislike the fact some people think they have more style by not wearing them and saying how awful they are.
As for uggs they are initially shoes for surfers. I never quite understood how this could be possible since they are known to be very warm, but then I started surfing myself: when you have your super heavy board under the arm and the sand is burning under the sun, classic flip flops do not help it at all since the hot sand gets caught in between the shoe and your feet. The uggs are the best way for this not to happen. Too bad they got off the beach.
