L I F E / Sparking My Interest

currently sparking my interest
/ What is still one of the most interesting things to me about the nineties is the fact that for the first time in history, underdressing became a thing. Sportswear, undone hair, deliberately looking casual and effortless. The phobia of being underdressed was finally completely displaced by the fear of overdressing.
/ A graduation collection from Tom Nijhuis inspired by the mid/late 90s Dutch hardcore house scene. A sub culture where 'gabbers' dressed in exclusively sportswear and girls danced around in sportsbra's and high ponytails.

I appreciate the fact that the 90's shook things up so much in fashion, but to me the fear of overdressing is just as absurd and dumb as the fear of underdressing. Going from one extreme to the other doesn't truly challenge anything, it just perpetuates the same mindset - that what other people think matters at all. Fear should not even factor in, that's where I truly want to see fashion go. I know it will never completely get there, because in the end we're social beings, but I try my best not to let fear get in the way of my style.

Hey Sarah! That's a really, really interesting thought, never looked at it that way. But yet I don't think it is only about fear. Not wanting to overdress also means not wanting to be decadent, not wanting to show off, not wanting excessiveness... but wanting to be more modest. And perhaps even wanting equality, this was the time where unlike in the 80s, showing off how rich you were became not done. What do you think?

I loved his collection.

Hi Ivania! I think underdressing can definitely be a powerful statement on modesty and equality, but I think that comes down to each individual’s conscious choice to base their style decisions on those principles. As soon as it becomes “the thing” to underdress, then most people start underdressing out of fear rather than out of a conscious choice. Now that minimal style has become a major trend, the real test of authenticity for individuals will be whether they hold onto that style when the opposite becomes popular again.

Fashion usually works in extremes, so my feeling is that 90’s minimalism had more to do with reacting to the extreme fashions of the 80’s rather than an earnest desire to be modest. But you’re the 90’s expert, so feel free to refute :) What are your thoughts?

Yes, I agree with you that a lot of people are only participating because they've seen it in some magzine or a Zara shop window.

But still I believe that fashion is always based on something deeper. I think it wasn't only a reaction to the extreme looks of the 80s, but also the extreme lifestyle, and crazy pursuit of decadence of the time. Fashion is always a mirror of what is going on in society, that's what makes it so interesting to me.

*Thank you for your comments Sarah! It has become such a rarity to find well thought opinions in the comment sections of fashion blogs :)

Let me tell it straight.

I don't care about sports. Shame on me but I don't even know the soccer rules. Never cared less.

I tried EVERYTHING from forex & stocks to internet marketing and affiliate programs.. I even made some money but then blew it all when the stock market went south.

I think I finally found it. Get It TODAY!!!
