W E A R I N G / Cut-Off Trousers = New Opportunities

Quite a chunk has been chopped off my recently thrifted trousers (before). The fact that a pair of perfectly fitting trousers is such a rare thing, had me doubting to work them with my scissors. Yesterday I finally trimmed off about about 20cm. Their new length creates a completely different silhouette and a lot of footwear-sock-layering opportunities. In all honesty, I was wearing my air max with these socks instead of these sandals. But you can count on it, when spring comes I'll be flip-flopping all over the place.
trousers: thrifted
sweatshirt: T by Alexander Wang (on sale here)
socks: Asos
sandals: DIY

It looks great! Can imagine you were a bit hesitant to work on perfect fitting trousers, oh yes .. but indeed, what an interesting silhouette it makes!

can you make a little bit more contrasted photos? I know all white everything is your thing, but people have different screens and just can't see a difference between white and more white :)

They really do have the perfect fit! Bravo to you! I've stumbled across a few gems while thrifting, but you're right, you don't come across them every outing!

I just looked at that Alexander Wang sweatshirt- It's made in China, and it's no special material. Why the hell is it so expensive? It seems like I could go to whatever store and buy a white sweatshirt for $15. It's not like you're paying for fantastic working conditions, or beautiful craftsmanship, or a rare and stunning material. You're paying for the label. I know you try to buy only quality, so how do you justify this? (I just re-read my question and see it comes across as rather brusque; I'm simply annoyed by the price of the sweater. I'm not trying to be rude.)

Agata said...

@ anonymous - i think you need to calibrate your monitor - i can clearly see the difference between all white shades and i have at least 3 different monitors at my house :)
just check your settings

Dear Karolina, no worries, your question is not rude at all.
Have you seen it online or in stores? Because there is so much difference in qualities of fabric. It could be a jersey sweater, but it doesn't say how heavy the jersey is, how tightly it is woven etc. In real life this piece is extra nice because it is a lined sweater, so the fabric is double; on the inside there is this suuuuper soft jersey and on the outside a thick ribbed fabric. When you see it in real life and try it on you'll notice a gigantic difference from a 'regular' sweatshirt. Also the stiffness; it barely wrinkles, and as you can see on these pictures, I've even rolled it up a couple of times to the inside to wear it cropped and it stays like this all day. And also I think that because we are surrounded by so many cheap clothes, we sometimes forget about the long process of work and resources that goes into making any kind of product. Made in China doesn't necessarily mean it is cheap and poorly made.

But enough of defending the sweatshirt.
You are also right that I might have been paying for the label too. Though it is a label that I've grown to trust over the years; who's fits are perfect for me, who always has the best quality fabrics for their basics and who's story I can very much identify with.

That's such an interesting discussion.
I find myself in real trouble when buying clothes, because I want to buy quality, but I'm also on a budget. And is the more expensive pieces really better in quality? And what about my h&m dress that has been beautiful for years now?

I'm so confused when it comes to buying clothes. It's really hard to tell quality from non-quality - also depending on how pricey it is.

LOVE AESTHETICS said...

cheap doesn't always equal good quality
expensive doesn't always equal bad quality

large brands are also trying to save wherever they can, and sadly they sometimes economize in the quality area. I would say; read the labels in the clothes, do research on fabrics to learn to recognize a cotton knit from a synthetic one. And lastly i would say: thrift! Most pieces from before the mass production era were made to last longer. You'll find pieces no one else has and for soo little money. My trousers in this post were only 3 euros for example.

You've guys sparked the idea to write a big post about how/where/why to thrift. Thanks for leaving your thoughts and opinions.

I really love cropped pants but I've got skinny ankles and legs so I end up looking like I've got two twigs sticking out of them. Haha, these look great on you though. Love the outfit x

These pants ARE perfect for you. They even put a smile on your face. :) But considering the absolute truth of your words (a perfect fit in pants is a very rare thing) I was wondering why you decided to cut them instead of rolling them up. Is it because everyone and their brothers are doing it? If that's the reason I can totally understand that but then you would be able to wear the pants both ways, depending on your mood. Just wondering about that.

I find the comments interesting, and also your response to them. I think if you buy a designer piece, you ARE buying it "FOR THE LABEL" and that is BECAUSE you appreciate that designer's particular vision and the thought and creative process that went into designing and making that line. (Unless you just buy something because it has a logo on it and you really don't care about anything except that).

Being an American, I try to buy/find vintage because I like to buy things that are USA made, and we get a lot of bad press here about Chinese garment factories being terrible for workers (but I agree, it is a case-by-case basis).

One of the most cost effective ways to find "made in the USA" here is to buy vintage, which is where I do the bulk of my shopping. (These garments are often made by ladies from the 70s-80s who were members of the ILGWU, an organization that protected women workers in the garment industry-I had family members who worked in the dress factories and so this cause is near and dear to my heart).

That doesn't mean I don't appreciate good design, and from your comments, Alexander Wang seems to be one of the designers that is worth investing in. I feel if you're serious enough to let your hard-earned cash go to making a designer purchase, than you should be serious enough about taking the time to make sure that designer's ethics hold up to your own standards/causes.

Sorry to spam your blog with this long comment hun, looking forward to seeing your upcoming post!
